Watch Google's Self-Driving Car Hit a Bus
Terminal month, Google revealed that ane of its autonomous vehicles—a self-driving Lexus—struck the side of a passing bus. Now, we have video of the incident.
The Associated Press got its hands on some footage of the accident, and posted it online. The footage, captured inside and exterior the bus, shows passengers' reactions to the crash besides every bit damage to both vehicles.
The footage is a reminder that while self-driving cars could eventually brand the roads safer and improve mobility, they're nevertheless a piece of work in progress. Google'southward self-driving cars have been involved in fender benders in the past, but this marks the first time one of its vehicles has been deemed responsible for a crash.
Every bit you can run across from the video below, Google's car suffered some trunk damage to the left front side of the vehicle, while the bus also got a chip banged up on its right side. No injuries were reported, all the same.
The incident occurred Feb. 14 on El Camino Real, a half-dozen-lane highway in Google's hometown of Mountain View, Calif., after the vehicle, driving in autonomous style, pulled toward a right-mitt curb to fix for a right turn.
The vehicle "detected sandbags near a tempest bleed blocking its path, and so information technology needed to come to a finish," Google said. "After waiting for some other vehicles to pass, our vehicle, still in autonomous style, began angling back toward the heart of the lane at around 2 mph — and fabricated contact with the side of a passing bus traveling at 15 mph. Our car had detected the approaching bus, but predicted that it would yield to us because nosotros were ahead of it."
